Fish of the Month

With our fish of the month feature we hope to present an eclectic mix of some of the

many hundreds of different species often to be found here at The Aquatic Habitat...

December 2017 - Cardinal Tetra The Cardinal tetra Paracheirodon axelrodi is quite possibly the most widely sold and popular tropical fish in world. With it’s bright red belly and electric blue stripe it’s colours are more than a match for any marine fish, whilst the sight of a shoal of these beauties in a well planted aquarium never fails to impress.  They originate from the Brazilian Rio Negro & also the Orinoco in Columbia & Venezuela. The are both “blackwater” rivers, so named because their waters are heavily stained with tannins, as a result the water is very soft and acidic. Trying to mimic these conditions in an aquarium can be very challenging, but fortunately is not necessary unless you wish to try to breed these aquatic beauties   more…
