With our fish of the month feature we hope to present an eclectic mix of some of the

many hundreds of different species often to be found here at The Aquatic Habitat...

November 2017 - Ornate Tetra The Ornate tetra Hyphessobrycon bentosi is a beautiful shoaling fish that originates from the Peruvian and Brazilian Amazon. These peaceful little fish grow to a maximum of about 4 cm and are ideal either as an addition to almost any community aquarium, or as the subject of a small species tank or biotope. The Ornate tetra is one of a group of similar looking deep bodied tetras which include better known species like the Bleeding Heart Tetra and the Serpae Tetra. Unlike many similar looking fish, Ornate tetras are not prone to fin nipping, and although they prefer soft acidic water, they will still thrive and maintain good colouration in more alkaline conditions     more…
October 2017 - Angelfish  To start our fish of the month series we have chosen one of the most popular and easily recognised tropical fish, angelfish. Angelfish originate from the Amazon basin in South America, they are widely distributed from Peru in the west to Brazil in the east, and also found in Colombia, Guyana, and French Guiana. There are three recognised species, Pterophyllum altum, P. leopoldi & P. scalare. All three have the same basic appearance, a deep, disc shaped body with long dorsal and anal fins, and two long, thin ventral fins. The body is silver or light tan with with vertical black bands running through it. there is often some blue in both the dorsal fin and around the gill plates, and some wild population are known for having orange or red crowns. more…
