With our fish of the month feature we hope to present an eclectic mix of some of the

many hundreds of different species often to be found here at The Aquatic Habitat...

February 2018 - Guppies Guppies, Poecilia reticulata, are also known as mosquito fish & millions fish. They originate from north east South America but are now to be found in tropical countries all over the world. This is in part because, reputed to eat mosquito larvae, they were deliberately introduced in an attempt to control malaria. Guppies are highly adaptable to water quality, and temperature, as a result they have thrived in almost every environment they’ve been introduced to. They also breed rapidly, as a result, their successful colonisation of new habitats has often been at the expense of the existing native species. As an aquarium fish they have a number of distinct advantages, and they have become one of the most popular, and widely recognised fish throughout the world….   more…
