Fish of the Month

With our fish of the month feature we hope to present an eclectic mix of some of the

many hundreds of different species often to be found here at The Aquatic Habitat...

January 2018 - Oscars Oscars, Astronotus oceollatus, are South American cichlids. These are definitely not “community” fish, with a maximum length of 14” (36cm), a capacious mouth, and an appetite to match, they would make short work of any small fish unfortunate enough to find themselves in the same tank. Despite this, they are very popular, and the reason for this is simple, Oscars are highly intelligent, inquisitive and have distinct, individual, personalities. They can recognise their owners and they keep a close eye on what’s going on outside their tanks. Inside the aquarium they will expend considerable effort in rearranging gravel, rocks, and other ornaments and decorations to their liking.   more…
